What is VSMT?

Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy is a therapy for all animals (no matter how big, small, or wiggly) that focuses on the nervous system. With VSMT we are primarily looking for regions of the spine or extremities that lack proper motion. We refer to these areas as regions of hypomobility, and they are commonly called subluxations. WIth decreased motion your nerves feeding these areas becomes less active and can lead to increased pain, muscle spasms or atrophy, improper organ function, and other issues.  Additionally less good stimulation is occurring in the brain and a decrease in mentation (brain functioning) likely follows. To help with these issues we want to increase motion to these regions of hypomobility. In order to do these we utilize a chiropractic type adjustment. An adjustment in a high velocity, low force thrust against specific anatomic structures in anatomically appropriate angles.
